10 Years of MUDRA Yojana: ₹32 Lakh Crore in Loans Disbursed; 68% of Beneficiaries Are Women, Says PM Modi
On April 8, the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) marked its 10th anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the beneficiaries of the scheme at 9 AM on Tuesday, congratulating them on their achievements and the scheme’s impact over the past decade.
Modi stated, “Today, as we celebrate 10 years of the MUDRA scheme (#10YearsOfMUDRA), we are also celebrating how it has empowered people and made countless dreams come true.”
In a post on X, the Prime Minister wrote, “This shows that nothing is impossible for the people of India. Every MUDRA loan brings dignity, self-respect, and opportunity.”
Empowering Small Businesses Through Collateral-Free Loans
Launched in 2015 by Prime Minister Modi, the MUDRA scheme aims to provide financial assistance to micro and small businesses without the need for collateral. Over the past 10 years, 52 crore loan accounts have been opened, and a total of ₹32 lakh crore in loans has been disbursed.
Of all beneficiaries, 68% are women, and 50% belong to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of making loans accessible to all entrepreneurs. “With access to credit, entrepreneurs can expand their businesses with confidence,” he said.
Transforming Lives: Real Stories from the Ground
On April 7, the Ministry of Finance released a statement sharing how the scheme has transformed lives.
For instance, Kamlesh, a tailor from Delhi, expanded his home-based business, employed three other women, and was able to enroll his children in a better school.
Bindu, who once made 50 brooms a day, now runs a unit that produces 500 brooms daily.
Growth in Small Towns and Rural Areas
The scheme has spurred business growth in smaller cities and villages. According to SKOCH’s “Outcomes of Modinomics 2014–24” report, since 2014, India has generated at least 5.14 crore new jobs annually, with PMMY alone contributing an average of 2.52 crore stable jobs per year. Jammu and Kashmir have reportedly benefited the most from the scheme.
Driving Women’s Economic Empowerment
Women account for 68% of the total MUDRA loan beneficiaries, playing a pivotal role in promoting women-led enterprises across the country.
Between FY2016 and FY2025, the average loan amount per woman increased at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13% to ₹62,679, while the average deposit per woman grew at a CAGR of 14% to ₹95,269.
States with higher participation of women under the scheme have witnessed notable job creation through women-led MSMEs, further contributing to economic empowerment and increasing women’s participation in the workforce.
