China Strikes Back at Trump with 125% Tariff on U.S. Goods

The trade war between the United States and China has intensified, reaching a critical point. As the U.S. continues to impose steep tariffs on Chinese imports, China has responded in kind. Just 24 hours after former President Donald Trump announced a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, China retaliated by increasing tariffs on American products to 125%.

The new tariffs will take effect starting Saturday. On April 9, Trump had announced the 145% tariff in response to China’s countermeasures, while also granting a 90-day tariff relief to over 70 other countries. Rather than backing down, China chose to respond assertively.

Amid Trump’s hardline approach, there had been reports suggesting that the two global superpowers were open to negotiating a resolution. However, China’s latest move appears to escalate the situation further, adding fuel to the fire rather than easing tensions.

According to Beijing’s State Council Tariff Commission, the U.S.’s imposition of unjustifiably high tariffs on China represents a serious violation of international trade laws and a fundamental challenge to basic economic principles. As a result of these tariffs, American products are becoming increasingly unpopular among Chinese importers.

Xi Jinping Appeals to the European Union

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the European Union to join forces with Beijing in resisting what he described as “unilateral bullying.” Just hours after this appeal, China formally announced the 125% tariff hike on U.S. goods.

President Xi stated that both China and Europe are ready to shoulder international responsibilities and stand together in confronting unilateralism. He emphasized that this alliance is not only about protecting mutual rights and interests but also about upholding global transparency and the rule of law.

Following his announcement of the 145% tariffs, Trump commented, “We are ready to make a deal with China. As the world’s two leading economic powers, we can find a proper solution to the trade war. The truth is, China has taken advantage of our country for far too long—more than anyone else has.”
