PM Surya Ghar Yojana: 10 Lakh Solar Plants Installed, Target of 1 Crore

Get 300 Units of Free Electricity & Earn ₹15,000 Annually

Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, as of March 10, 2025, over 10.09 lakh households across India have installed solar power plants. Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi shared this milestone on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, calling it a historic achievement in India’s journey towards solar energy adoption.

Launched a Year Ago with ₹75,021 Crore Budget

The PM Surya Ghar Yojana was launched on February 13, 2024, with a budget of ₹75,021 crore. The goal is to provide 1 crore families with 300 units of free electricity each month.

Households installing rooftop solar panels can also earn up to ₹15,000 annually by selling excess electricity back to the grid. More than 1 crore applications have already been received under this scheme.

Cost & Subsidy for Solar Panel Installation

Under the scheme, the government covers a significant portion of the installation cost through subsidies:

  • Up to 2 kW systems: 60% subsidy provided
  • For 3 kW systems: Additional 40% subsidy on the extra 1 kW
  • Total cost for a 3 kW system: ₹1.45 lakh
    • Government subsidy: ₹78,000
    • Remaining cost: ₹67,000 (Loan options available at low interest rates)

Banks will offer low-interest loans for the remaining amount, with interest rates just 0.5% above the repo rate.

How to Apply for the PM Surya Ghar Yojana?

The government has launched a national portal for easy application:

  1. Visit PM Surya Ghar Official Portal.
  2. Register with your consumer number, name, address, and preferred solar capacity.
  3. Verification by DISCOM (electricity distribution company).
  4. Choose a vendor from the pre-approved list on the portal.
  5. Installation of the solar panel and net metering setup by DISCOM.
  6. Upload installation proof on the portal for subsidy disbursement.

Required Documents for Application

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Proof of Address (Ration Card, Electricity Bill, etc.)
  • Income Certificate
  • Mobile Number
  • Bank Passbook Copy
  • Passport-size Photo

How Will You Receive the Subsidy?

Once the solar plant is installed, and net metering is set up, proof of installation will be uploaded on the portal. The government will then transfer the full subsidy amount directly to the applicant’s bank account under the DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) scheme.

How Much Free Electricity Will You Get?

  • 1 kW solar panel generates 4-5 units per day.
  • 3 kW solar panel generates around 15 units per day (450 units/month).
  • You can use the electricity for free, and any excess power will be sent back to the grid, earning you up to ₹15,000 per year.

This scheme not only reduces electricity bills but also promotes clean energy adoption, making India a leader in renewable energy initiatives.
