China Stands Firm, Prepared to Retaliate Against Trump’s 50% Tariff Threat

After U.S. President Donald Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs on 180 countries—including China—and later threatened an additional 50% tariff, China has responded strongly, showing no signs of backing down. The Chinese government has warned that it will take all necessary measures to protect its rights and interests.

Earlier, China had retaliated against the U.S. by imposing a 34% tariff on American imports. In response, President Trump issued a warning: if China does not withdraw its tariffs by April 8, the U.S. will impose an additional 50% tariff starting April 9. Despite this, China has remained firm in its stance.

China Responds to Trump’s Warning

In an official statement, China’s Ministry of Commerce called the U.S. decision to impose so-called “reciprocal tariffs” completely baseless and accused the U.S. of using coercive tactics. “This is a clear attempt to pressure the Chinese people through intimidation. We will respond forcefully and will not retreat from our decisions,” the ministry said.

China Accuses the U.S. of Blackmail

China further condemned the U.S. threat of additional tariffs, calling it a grave mistake and an example of economic blackmail. “China will never accept such tactics. If the U.S. continues down this path, we are prepared to fight until the end,” the statement added.

Trump’s Tariff Escalation

On April 4, President Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs on 180 countries, including a 34% tariff on Chinese imports. China quickly responded with an identical tariff on U.S. goods. In reaction, Trump warned that unless China rolls back its tariffs by April 8, a further 50% tariff would be imposed starting April 9. Observing China’s hardline approach to the trade war, Trump has also refused further negotiations.
