India has approved the execution model for its upcoming fifth-generation fighter jet project. This decision marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to boost defence self-reliance.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh gave the green light to the model on Monday. The project involves the development of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), a stealth-based multirole fighter.
The model defines how the project will move forward. It also outlines the roles of government agencies and private partners. Importantly, it aims to fast-track indigenous defence manufacturing.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will lead the project. In addition, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and private firms will play key roles in production and integration.
Officials stated that this step would enhance India’s defence capabilities. It will also reduce dependence on foreign jets in the future.
Moreover, experts believe this is a positive move towards making India a defence export hub. AMCA will likely compete with global fifth-generation jets once completed.
The prototype is expected to be ready by 2028. Trials will begin soon after that.
