Google Pixel 9a Runs a Smaller Gemini Nano LLM, Lacks AI Features Due to RAM Limitations
Unlike its flagship counterparts, the Pixel 9a does not run its large language model (LLM) continuously in the background.
Google introduced the Pixel 9a on Wednesday as the latest addition to its budget-friendly “a” series. To keep costs down, the device omits some features found in the flagship Pixel 9 models. While the Pixel 9a still supports AI-powered capabilities through Google’s large language model (LLM), a report suggests that its 8GB RAM limitation forces it to use a smaller version of Gemini Nano compared to its high-end counterparts.
A Smaller Gemini Model for the Pixel 9a
Despite featuring the same Tensor G4 SoC as other Pixel 9 models, the Pixel 9a comes with only 8GB of RAM. Due to this constraint, Google has implemented a more compact LLM to handle AI-related tasks. According to ArsTechnica, the company confirmed that the Pixel 9a runs Gemini Nano 1.0 XXS (extra extra small) to conserve resources and address memory-related performance limitations in local AI processing.
Unlike flagship models, the Pixel 9a does not run the LLM in the background continuously. Instead, it loads the model only when needed, which may result in slightly slower performance for AI-driven tasks. Additionally, the LLM lacks multimodal capabilities, meaning it can only process text-based commands. This raises concerns about the availability of several multimodal features, such as the Pixel Screenshots app. Launched alongside the Pixel 9 series last year, this app retrieves information from stored screenshots and provides relevant responses. Reports suggest that this feature may not be available on the Pixel 9a.
Another missing feature is Call Notes, an AI-powered tool that uses Gemini Nano to automatically generate call summaries. Since this function requires audio processing, it may not be supported on the Pixel 9a. However, one confirmed AI feature is Recorder Summaries, which transcribes and summarizes audio recordings.
It’s important to note that Google has not officially confirmed which AI features will be absent from the Pixel 9a.
