Kiran Rao Reveals Unique Challenges of Her Romance with Aamir Khan During Pre-Internet Era

Producer and filmmaker Kiran Rao recently opened up about her love story with actor Aamir Khan. In an interview with Filmfare, Kiran shared that their romance began in 2004 during the shooting of the film Swades. At that time, Aamir was working on Mangal Pandey, and Kiran was part of the crew for Swades.

Discussing the challenges of communication back then, Kiran said, “There was no widespread internet or smartphones. Sometimes, we had to climb hills just to get a signal for a phone call.”

Kiran described Aamir as a simple, down-to-earth person despite his stardom. “He is not overly ‘filmy.’ Even during shoots, he blends in with the crew as if he’s just another team member. That made it easy for us to connect on a deeper level,” she said.

She also mentioned that while Aamir’s star status never intimidated her, she had to adapt her wardrobe during their dating phase. “I didn’t have the kind of outfits a public figure typically owns. I shopped from street markets or budget brands as I couldn’t afford high-end fashion back then,” Kiran revealed with a laugh.

Timeline of Their Relationship:
Aamir and Kiran first met on the sets of Lagaan in 2001, where Kiran was an assistant director. Their romance, however, blossomed years later during Swades. The couple married in December 2005 and were together for 16 years before announcing their separation in July 2021.
