Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan made a historic debut at the 2025 Met Gala, becoming the first Indian male actor to attend the prestigious fashion event. Held on May 5 at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, this year’s gala embraced the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” celebrating the influence of Black fashion and menswear. The event featured co-chairs Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams, with LeBron James serving as honorary chair .
Khan captivated attendees in a custom ensemble designed by renowned Indian couturier Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The outfit paid homage to both Black and Indian dandyism, traditions that have redefined classic tailoring. Khan wore a tailored, floor-length coat made from fine Tasmanian wool, accented with Japanese horn buttons, paired with a black silk shirt, tailored trousers, and a satin kamarbandh for added structure. His accessories featured layered talismanic chains, a crystal-studded ‘K’ pendant, a diamond star brooch, multiple rings, and an 18k gold cane adorned with precious stones .

Despite his global fame, a moment on the red carpet highlighted cultural differences: a reporter unfamiliar with Khan asked him to introduce himself. Responding with grace, Khan said, “I’m Shah Rukh,” and added, “I’m good, thank you.” This interaction, captured on video, quickly went viral, sparking discussions about the global recognition of non-Western celebrities.
In an interview during the gala, Khan admitted to feeling both nervous and excited, stating, “I don’t know much about its history, I’m nervous and excited.” He also shared that his children were enthusiastic about his attendance, which influenced his decision to participate. Khan remarked, “I wasn’t planning to attend initially, but when Sabyasachi insisted, my kids were thrilled too, so I came” .
