Dragon’s New Retaliation: China Imposes 125% Tariff in Response to America’s 145% Tariff

  • The US-China tariff war shows no signs of stopping, as the world’s two largest economies continue to clash.

Beijing: The US-China tariff war seems to have no end in sight. After the US imposed tariffs as high as 145% on Chinese goods, China retaliated by imposing a 125% tariff on American products. Furthermore, China openly accused the US of violating international trade norms.

The State Council of China’s Tariff Commission issued a statement on Friday, calling the US tariffs unreasonable. China confirmed that the new tariffs on American goods would take effect starting Saturday night. Mocking the US tariffs, China remarked that this is essentially a “number game,” which may one day turn absurd.

China’s Ministry of Commerce also noted that after the US raised tariffs, China had filed a case against the US at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

According to the latest reports, the US has imposed a total of 145% tariffs on Chinese goods. In retaliation, China had previously implemented 84% tariffs on American goods, along with restrictions on certain American imports. Additionally, China expressed its willingness to resolve any issues through diplomatic negotiations.

It is worth noting that China is the only country that has directly retaliated against the US in this manner.

President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on various countries, but his frustration seems particularly directed at China. He has also indicated that tariffs on India may increase.

Meanwhile, Trump stated on Thursday that after a 90-day pause, trade partners must reach an agreement with the US by July 9. Those who fail to do so will face reciprocal tariffs.

Trump had previously announced on Wednesday that the reciprocal tariffs, which would apply to 75 countries starting April 9, would be suspended for 90 days. This measure primarily targets countries with which the US has a trade imbalance.

The US has immediately implemented a 125% tariff on Chinese imports, in addition to the 10% increase in tariffs that was imposed in April. However, the 26% increase in tariffs on Indian goods has been suspended for 90 days.
