Ashwani Kumar’s Remarkable IPL Debut: From Struggles to Stardom
Mumbai Indians have unveiled a new pace sensation in Ashwani Kumar, who delivered a dream debut performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Monday. The young seamer from Jhanjheri, Mohali, played a pivotal role in Mumbai Indians’ victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), claiming 4 wickets for 24 runs in just three overs. His outstanding spell helped restrict KKR to a modest total of 116 runs.
Despite his stunning debut, Ashwani’s journey to the IPL has been filled with hardships. Bought at his base price of INR 30 lakh in the IPL mega auction, the young pacer overcame numerous obstacles to achieve his dream.
In an interview with The Indian Express, Ashwani’s father, Harkesh Kumar, reflected on his son’s dedication and perseverance.
“Whether it was pouring rain or extreme heat, Ashwani never hesitated to train at the PCA Academy in Mohali or later at the new stadium in Mullanpur. Sometimes, he cycled there, took lifts, or traveled in shared autos,” his father recalled.
“I remember he would take Rs 30 from me for the fare. When he was bought for Rs 30 lakh by Mumbai Indians, I knew every penny had been worth it. After each wicket today, I thought about those days when he would return home at 10 PM after training, only to wake up again at 5 AM for another session,” he added.
Ashwani faced multiple rejections during trials with Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Rajasthan Royals. However, he remained determined, idolizing Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Starc. Ironically, he now finds himself stepping into Bumrah’s shoes for Mumbai Indians this season.
“He attended trials for several IPL teams but always aspired to be like Bumrah and Starc. His friends pooled money to buy him cricket balls, and when Mumbai Indians picked him for Rs 30 lakh, the first thing he did was distribute cricket kits and balls to academies near our village,” said his elder brother, Shiv Rana.
“He always dreamed of wearing a jersey with his name on it. After today’s performance, he has ensured that young cricketers will wear jerseys with his name in the future.”
Following his stellar debut, Ashwani was named Player of the Match for Mumbai Indians. His mother, meanwhile, believes he will be craving a taste of home after his big moment on the field.
“He loves besan ka chilla and aloo parathas. I’m sure he would be wanting that in Mumbai today,” she said with pride.
From borrowing Rs 30 for transport to making history on his IPL debut, Ashwani Kumar’s journey is a testament to perseverance, hard work, and unwavering determination. His story is an inspiration for aspiring cricketers, proving that with dedication, dreams do come true.
