The BCCI has responded to the controversy surrounding Virat Kohli’s iconic No. 18 Test jersey. The issue escalated after pacer Mukesh Kumar wore the number in an India A match, triggering fan outrage. Supporters felt the number, strongly associated with Kohli, deserved retirement.

Virat Kohli has a personal connection with the number. He debuted for India on August 18 and lost his father on December 18. He once described the number as having a “cosmic connection” to his life. As a result, fans consider No. 18 sacred.

In light of this, former cricketer Suresh Raina urged the BCCI to retire Kohli’s jersey, along with Rohit Sharma’s No. 45, just like they did for Tendulkar’s No. 10 and Dhoni’s No. 7. The BCCI, however, clarified that Kohli’s jersey has not been officially retired, though it’s unlikely to be reassigned in top-level cricket.

Cricket experts are split on the idea of jersey retirements. Some say it honors legends, while others argue it may restrict number availability. Despite the debate, Kohli remains one of Indian cricket’s most respected figures, and No. 18 continues to hold emotional value for fans.

The BCCI’s stance is cautious but respectful. While not officially retired, No. 18 will likely remain off-limits out of admiration for Kohli’s immense contribution to the game.
