Several cases of HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) have been reported in India, raising concerns among people and sparking numerous questions. With the emergence of this virus, some believe it could lead to a pandemic similar to COVID-19. These worries stem from the fact that, like the coronavirus, HMPV also originated in China.
Information Shared on Social Media
It is important to note that there is currently no evidence to suggest that HMPV is as dangerous as COVID-19. Former Chief Scientist of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, addressed these concerns in a social media post on the platform X, sharing information about HMPV and emphasizing that there is no need to panic.
What Did the Former WHO Scientist Say?
#HMPvirus is nothing to panic about. It’s a known virus that causes respiratory infections, mostly mild. Rather than jump at detection of every pathogen, we shld all take normal precautions when we have a cold: wear a mask, wash hands, avoid crowds, consult Dr if severe symptoms

In her post, Dr. Soumya Swaminathan stated:
“People need not worry about this virus. It is an old virus that causes respiratory infections and does not pose significant risks. Instead of focusing on every pathogen, it is essential to take general precautions during illnesses like the common cold. Wear masks, avoid crowded places, wash your hands frequently, and consult a doctor if you experience severe symptoms.”
Dr. Swaminathan’s clarification reassures the public that HMPV is not a new threat and can be managed with basic preventive measures.
