New HMPV Virus Case in Gujarat: Two-Month-Old Baby Among First Infected
Gujarat Reports First Case of HMPV Virus: Two-Month-Old Baby in Ahmedabad Tests Positive
In a concerning development for Gujarat, the first case of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been detected in Ahmedabad. A two-month-old infant from the Chandkheda area has tested positive for the virus and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The child, who had been suffering from cold and fever for the past 15 days, was admitted after the symptoms worsened. Doctors placed the baby on a ventilator for five days, but the infant’s condition has since stabilized, and there is no immediate cause for alarm.
HMPV, a virus similar to COVID-19, has been spreading in China and has now made its way to India. The virus has already affected two other babies in Karnataka—a three-month-old and an eight-month-old—though health authorities assure that these cases are under control. The Health Department has clarified that the baby’s test results came from a private lab, and no further investigation into government labs has been conducted.
This virus primarily impacts young children, especially those under the age of two. It exhibits symptoms like a common cold, cough, and fever, often resembling COVID-19. While there is no specific vaccine or treatment for HMPV, patients are usually given symptomatic care, and experts advise caution.
In light of the emerging cases, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has been alerted, and isolation wards for HMPV patients are being prepared. Health authorities have urged the public, especially parents of young children, to be vigilant. It is recommended to avoid crowded places, wear masks if showing symptoms, and maintain good hygiene. Authorities have also suggested ensuring adequate hydration, nutrition, and rest to strengthen the immune system.
As the virus spreads, the Health Department has emphasized that there is no reason to panic, but caution and preventive measures remain crucial in curbing its impact.
