Google Reportedly Developing Support for a Second Language in Gemini Live

Google is reportedly working on adding support for a second language in Gemini Live. According to recent reports, the Mountain View-based tech giant is developing a feature that will allow users to communicate with the AI chatbot in two different languages across both speech and text. This means Gemini Live will not only understand multiple languages simultaneously but also respond accordingly. Initial evidence of this feature was discovered in December, and now Google has updated its support pages to highlight the addition of a second language.

Gemini Live May Soon Support a Second Language

Currently, Gemini Live, Google’s real-time two-way voice chat feature, allows users to switch between languages mid-sentence, with the AI understanding and responding appropriately. With the right prompting, users can also make Gemini speak in two languages at the same time—an advantage for those who use hybrid language varieties such as Hinglish (a mix of Hindi and English) or Spanglish (a blend of Spanish and English).

However, despite this flexibility, Gemini Live does not always recognize the second language reliably, even after multiple prompts. Additionally, support for a second language is currently limited to Gemini Live and is not available across other Google AI interactions, restricting its overall usability.

According to a report by Android Authority, Google is now developing a settings option that will allow users to manually set a second language. This discovery was made during an Android application package (APK) teardown of the beta version 16.9.39.sa.arm64 of the Google app. The report states that while the settings option is visible when enabling certain developer flags, the feature itself is likely not yet functional, as it may require a server-side update from Google.

Increased Language Support and Future Implications

In addition to these developments, Google has updated its Gemini Live support page. Previously, the feature supported 30 languages, but this has now expanded to more than 45. The updated support page also states, “In settings, you can add up to 2 languages to talk with Gemini Live in.”

At this stage, it remains unclear how Google plans to fully implement this feature and whether it will extend beyond Gemini Live. Questions remain about how adding a second language will impact Gemini AI interactions in Android, text-based chats with the chatbot, and integrations with Google Workspace tools. The company has not yet announced an official release date for the feature.
