Instagram Developing ‘Community Chat’ Feature Similar to Discord
New Moderation Tools to Ensure Safe Conversations on Instagram
Instagram is reportedly working on a new feature called ‘Community Chat’, similar to Discord, allowing users to engage in topic-based conversations within a group. This feature will allow up to 250 users in a single community. Well-known developer Alessandro Paluzzi has shared insights about this upcoming feature, which is expected to bring enhanced group communication functionalities to Instagram.
New Moderation Controls for Community Chat
Instagram had previously introduced the Broadcast Channels feature, allowing users to send messages to all their followers at once, similar to WhatsApp’s broadcast feature. However, Community Chat will offer more advanced functionalities.
Like Discord, users will be able to create different chat groups within a single community based on topics of interest. For example, one group could be dedicated to travel discussions, while another could focus on food-related topics. Users will have the option to invite specific members to each group.
Additionally, Instagram will provide moderation controls to ensure a safe environment. Admins will have the ability to delete messages within the chat to maintain security. Instagram will also monitor the content and language used within the groups to ensure compliance with its policies.
When Will It Be Launched?
There is no official confirmation regarding the launch date of the Community Chat feature. An Instagram spokesperson has stated that this feature is still an internal prototype and has not yet been tested outside the company.
Meta has already introduced similar features in its other apps. In 2022, WhatsApp launched the Communities feature, followed by Community Chat on Facebook and Messenger. Now, Instagram is expected to introduce this feature soon.
