Lex Fridman Explains His 45-Hour Fast in Honor of a Podcast with PM Modi

In a recent podcast with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, American scientist Lex Fridman revealed that he fasted for 45 hours as a tribute to the conversation. “I’m fasting right now—it’s been almost two days, 45 hours, with only water and no food—to set the right mindset and connect on a spiritual level,” he explained.

PM Modi expressed his delight at learning about Fridman’s fast. “It feels like you’re fasting as a sign of respect, and I express my deepest gratitude for this gesture,” he said. The Prime Minister emphasized that fasting sharpens the senses, enhances mental clarity, and instills discipline.

“Fasting is a way to cultivate discipline and bring both your inner and outer self into balance. It has a profound impact on life. When you fast, every sense—especially smell, touch, and taste—becomes heightened. I have also found that fasting accelerates the thinking process and offers fresh perspectives, encouraging you to think outside the box,” PM Modi added.

He also recalled a memorable incident from his time in office. After becoming Prime Minister, Modi attended a bilateral meeting at the White House with former US President Barack Obama. During a formal dinner arranged by Obama, someone remarked, “But the Prime Minister doesn’t eat,” which initially puzzled the hosts about how to accommodate him. Instead, PM Modi was served a glass of hot water. “When they placed the glass in front of me, I joked with President Obama, ‘Look, my dinner has arrived!’” he recalled. In a later meeting, Obama humorously remembered, “Last time, you were fasting. This time, since you’re not, you’ll have to eat twice as much.”

Further, PM Modi explained that fasting is a scientific process. Before undertaking an extended fast, he prepares his body for 5 to 7 days by following various Ayurvedic and yoga practices, along with traditional cleansing methods, to internally reset his system. “Before starting the fast, I ensure I drink plenty of water to detoxify my body. Once I begin fasting, it becomes an act of devotion—a form of self-discipline,” he concluded.
