Saif Ali Khan Attack Case: Mumbai Police Files 1,000-Page Chargesheet, Forensic Report Confirms Knife Fragments Match
In the high-profile case involving an attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, the Mumbai Police has filed a 1,000-page chargesheet in the Bandra Court. The document presents extensive evidence against the accused, Shariful Islam, including forensic findings, fingerprint matches, and details of the crime.
Forensic Report Links Knife Fragments to the Same Weapon
According to Mumbai Police, the chargesheet includes a forensic laboratory report confirming that the knife fragments recovered from Saif’s body and the one found in the possession of the accused originated from the same weapon. During the investigation, police also found fingerprints from the accused’s left hand, which matched those on the weapon fragments.
Bail Application and Police Opposition
The chargesheet was filed shortly after Shariful Islam Shahzad, who was arrested in connection with the attack, submitted a bail application in the Mumbai Sessions Court on March 29. The accused claimed he was being falsely implicated and that the case against him was fabricated.
However, during the bail hearing on April 4, Mumbai Police presented strong forensic evidence, stating that the knife used in the attack was indeed recovered from the accused and matched the fragments extracted from Saif’s spine. The police argued that the evidence was substantial and the accused posed a flight risk, potentially fleeing to Bangladesh if released.
Details of the Attack
The attack occurred on the night of January 15, when the accused broke into Saif Ali Khan’s residence in Bandra and stabbed him multiple times. The actor suffered six stab wounds to his neck, back, arms, and head. He was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent treatment and was discharged on January 21.
Two days after the incident, police arrested Shariful Islam, a Bangladeshi national, who was allegedly living in Mumbai illegally under the alias Vijay Das. Authorities also seized his Bangladeshi ID and driving license.
Police Arguments Against Bail
In court, Mumbai Police presented three main arguments opposing bail:
-
The accused may not appear in court if granted bail.
-
There is a risk that he may bribe witnesses or tamper with evidence.
-
There is a possibility that he may commit similar offenses in the future.
Medical and Forensic Evidence
-
Medical reports confirmed Saif sustained five stab wounds — to his back, shoulder, neck, elbow, and arm.
-
The wound sizes ranged from 0.5 cm to 15 cm.
-
Saif’s friend, Afzar Zaidi, took him to Lilavati Hospital at 4:11 AM following the attack.
-
The forensic science lab (FSL) in Kalina analyzed the knife fragments, and both medical and chemical analyses confirmed they belonged to the same weapon.
