Tahawwur Rana, Convicted in Mumbai Terror Attacks, to Be Extradited to India Today: May Be Held in Mumbai or Delhi Jail; NIA Team Reaches U.S.

Childhood Friend of 26/11 Mastermind David Headley

Tahawwur Rana, convicted in connection with the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is expected to be brought to India today. Sources suggest that he may be held in either a Mumbai or Delhi prison upon arrival. A team from India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has already reached the United States to facilitate the extradition process.

During a court hearing last year, government prosecutors revealed that Rana was a childhood friend of David Headley, the mastermind behind the attacks. Rana was fully aware of Headley’s association with the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba. By providing financial assistance to Headley, Rana played a role in supporting the terrorist organization and its operatives.

Authorities claim Rana possessed crucial information about Headley’s meetings and communications. He was also reportedly aware of the planning behind the attacks and the intended targets. The U.S. government stated that Rana was part of the overall conspiracy and that there is strong evidence indicating his involvement in funding the terror operation.

Rana’s Last-Minute Legal Attempt to Avoid Extradition

Just days ago, Tahawwur Rana made a last-ditch legal move to avoid extradition. He filed an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the decision. The court had scheduled a hearing for April 4, 2025. In his plea, Rana once again sought a stay on his extradition. However, his earlier review petition had already been rejected by Justice Elena Kagan.
