Scooter Sales Break Records, Surpassing Motorcycles
Ahmedabad: Two-wheelers are once again dominating Indian roads, with scooters leading the way. Once considered an essential part of every household, scooters have made a remarkable comeback with modern technology and advanced designs.
In the first 11 months of the financial year 2024-25 (April to February), scooter sales increased by 16.6%, reaching nearly 6.3 million units, surpassing previous records. In contrast, the motorcycle market saw slower growth, with sales rising by only 5% to 11.2 million units.
The rise in urbanization, increasing demand for convenient transportation, and the growing popularity of electric scooters have driven the scooter market to new heights. Modern technology, rising fuel prices, and government EV policies have contributed to this surge, pushing scooter sales toward record-breaking levels.
In India, scooter demand is growing three times faster than that of motorcycles.
Experts attribute this surge in scooter sales to several factors, including new launches, increased discounts, and rising demand for electric vehicles. Scooter sales could reach 7 million units by 2025. Over the past two years, the motorcycle market share has dropped from 63.1% to 60.7%.
The demand for electric scooters is also rising rapidly. In 2024, a total of 1.15 million electric two-wheelers were sold, accounting for 6.3% of the total two-wheeler market. The government’s ‘PM E-Drive’ scheme, which provides subsidies of up to ₹10,000, has encouraged more people to purchase electric scooters.
