This book brings together a collection of photographs that encapsulate the socio-political atmosphere of Bihar from the 1970s to the mid-90s. Each image, captured through my father’s lens, tells a story beyond just the visual—documenting key political, cultural, and social moments of that era. The book does more than just offer a glimpse into the past; it draws comparisons to the present, encouraging readers to reflect on how Bihar has changed and what remains the same.

2. What personal or professional experience do you bring to this subject, and what inspired you to write this book?

My father was a trailblazing photojournalist in Bihar, actively documenting historical moments from the mid-70s to the mid-90s. His extensive collection of negatives remained with him, even when some of these photographs never made it to publication. During the COVID lockdown, we took the opportunity to digitize these invaluable images using a specialized device we acquired from abroad. Many negatives had deteriorated over time, but we managed to restore a significant number. Unfortunately, my father passed away in July 2023 before he could complete this project. As his son, I felt it was my responsibility to carry forward his legacy, relying on his notes and my understanding of the photo grid to bring this book to life. While I may not fully do justice to his work, I take immense pride in sharing it with the world.

One of the most striking images in the book features former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar sitting under a tree, having a simple conversation with a poor family. There is no crowd, no media spectacle—just an intimate moment of connection between a leader and the people. Such instances, which were once common, are rare today. This photograph exemplifies how leaders of the past were deeply engaged with the “aam-aadmi” in ways that are often missing in contemporary politics.

5. Were there any particular challenges you faced while compiling this book? How did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges was understanding certain events and subjects, especially those that took place before I was born. However, my father’s detailed notes, as well as the numerous discussions we had over the years, helped me piece together the context and meaning behind each photograph.

6. How do you hope this book will impact readers?

My primary goal is for readers to experience the joy of discovering rare and historically significant photographs. Beyond nostalgia, I hope they reflect on the evolution of Bihar’s socio-political landscape and gain a deeper appreciation for the changes that have shaped it.

Many of the figures and events captured in this book continue to hold significance in India’s political and social discourse. Some of these leaders remain active, while others have left a lasting impact on the nation’s history. Additionally, photography as an art form never loses its value. By keeping the text minimal and allowing the images to tell their own stories, I have ensured that this book remains a timeless visual archive of Bihar’s defining moments.
