Kamal Haasan Poised for Rajya Sabha Entry with DMK Backing

Kamal Haasan, the veteran actor and founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), is likely to enter the Rajya Sabha with support from Tamil Nadu’s ruling party, the DMK.

According to party insiders, the DMK has decided to nominate Haasan for one of the upcoming Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu. With its numerical strength in the state assembly, the DMK can ensure his smooth entry into the Upper House.

With this move, Kamal Haasan will mark his official entry into Parliament. Although his party MNM didn’t perform strongly in the 2021 Assembly elections, Haasan’s individual influence remains strong—particularly among urban and young voters.

This decision also signals a closer political alignment between MNM and DMK. While both parties share a common secular and progressive platform, formal cooperation has remained limited—until now.

To complement Haasan’s nomination, the DMK may use this opportunity to expand its alliance base in the lead-up to the 2026 Assembly elections.

According to sources, DMK leader and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin personally endorsed Haasan’s name. The move is seen as both symbolic and strategic.

While Kamal Haasan has yet to make an official comment, MNM members welcomed the development. They believe his entry into Parliament will amplify their core agenda: anti-corruption, scientific governance, and inclusive growth.

If elected, Haasan could become a key voice in debates on cultural policies, federalism, and media freedom.
