The Mahakumbh is in its final days, with only two days remaining. Today marks the 43rd day of the grand event, witnessing an even larger turnout than Sunday. So far, 91 lakh devotees have bathed in the Sangam today, bringing the total count since January 13 to a staggering 62.61 crore.
Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar was among those who took a holy dip in the Sangam today. Actress Katrina Kaif also attended the Mahakumbh and was seen seeking blessings from Swami Chidanand Saraswati at the Parmarth Niketan camp.
Traffic Chaos at Entry Points
A heavy rush has led to severe traffic congestion around the entry points of Prayagraj. Vehicles heading towards the Sangam are being halted 10 km before the fairgrounds, forcing pilgrims to rely on autos, e-rickshaws, or shuttle buses. However, auto drivers are charging exorbitant fares—up to ₹1,000 for a 10-km ride, compelling many devotees to walk the distance.
Mahashivratri Procession Restricted
A 16-km-long procession is traditionally taken out in Prayagraj city on Mahashivratri, along with processions from several temples. However, after discussions with the police, the organizing committee has agreed not to hold the procession this year due to concerns over managing the massive crowd.
Board Exams Rescheduled Due to Mahakumbh
With the ongoing congestion, the administration has postponed the board exams for classes 10th and 12th, scheduled for February 24. These exams will now be conducted on March 9.
Security Measures and Law Enforcement Actions
DIG Vaibhav Krishna assured that all necessary arrangements have been made for Mahashivratri, stating that the administration is fully prepared to manage the crowd.
Meanwhile, law enforcement has intensified efforts to curb overcharging and illegal activities. On Sunday night:
- 200+ bikes were seized in a crackdown on biker gangs at GT Jawahar Crossing.
- 50 vehicles parked illegally were towed away.
- 750 vehicles were issued traffic violation memos.
Additionally, boatmen have been charging steep prices from pilgrims. A Bhaskar reporter, inquiring about a boat ride from Maujgiri Ghat to Sangam, was quoted ₹20,000—a sharp contrast to the usual ₹1,000 fare.
Sanitation Workers to Set a New Record
Today, over 15,000 sanitation workers are set to create a record by conducting a large-scale cleanliness drive at Mahakumbh. Earlier, on February 14, more than 300 sanitation workers had set a similar record by cleaning the riverbanks.
