PM Modi Unveils Groundbreaking Anti-Obesity Campaign, Nominates 10 Influential Leaders Including Anand Mahindra and Omar Abdullah, Urging Public to Reduce Edible Oil Consumption for a Healthier Future for 6 seconds
Prime Minister Narendra Modi kickstarted a nationwide anti-obesity initiative on Monday by nominating 10 eminent figures from various sectors. The list features notable personalities such as Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, industrialist Anand Mahindra, and shooter Manu Bhaker, among others.
These nominated leaders will spearhead efforts to raise awareness about the health risks associated with obesity. In a cascading model designed to amplify the movement, each nominee is also encouraged to nominate 10 additional people, thereby broadening the campaign’s reach over time. During the 119th episode of Mann Ki Baat on February 23, PM Modi underscored the importance of combating obesity.
In his address, Modi said, “I aim to strengthen the fight against obesity and promote awareness about reducing the use of edible oils. I am nominating these individuals and request that they further nominate 10 persons each, so that our movement gains momentum.”
Omar Abdullah expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am delighted to join the campaign against obesity launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.” He further took to social media to stress that obesity is linked to a range of lifestyle-related health issues, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, respiratory problems, and mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression.
Highlighting the urgency of the matter, PM Modi noted that confronting obesity is key to building a fit and healthy India. He cited studies indicating that one in every eight people suffers from obesity today, with cases having doubled in recent years—and a particularly alarming fourfold increase among children. Modi urged the public to “Decide to use 10% less edible oil every month,” calling it a crucial step toward reducing obesity.
This ambitious campaign is set to make a lasting impact on public health by encouraging sustainable lifestyle changes across the nation.
