Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte Officially Transferred to ICC Custody by Philippine Authorities
Philippine Embassy in The Netherlands Coordinates Consular Support and Essential Needs for Duterte During Detention
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has officially been turned over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to face charges related to his controversial “war on drugs” campaign. Duterte arrived at Rotterdam Airport on March 12 aboard a chartered flight (RP-C5219), where he was taken into ICC custody.
Duterte’s Arrival and Embassy Assistance
The Philippine Embassy in the Netherlands confirmed that appropriate winter clothing, a change of clothes, and care packages were provided to Duterte and his accompanying delegation upon arrival. Additionally, the Netherlands’ immigration authorities granted two-day visas to his nurse and aide, allowing them time to rest before their return flight.
Former Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, acting as Duterte’s legal counsel, was issued a 15-day visa and has been granted permission to visit him at the ICC Detention Center in Scheveningen, The Hague.
Health Concerns and Medical Arrangements
In light of Duterte’s health condition, the embassy emphasized the need for close medical attention. An ICC nurse consulted with Duterte’s personal nurse regarding his medical needs, and an ICC medical doctor is scheduled to conduct a full check-up upon his arrival at the detention center.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
The Philippine Embassy has coordinated with ICC officials to ensure that Duterte has access to consular assistance during his detention. This development follows Duterte’s arrest in Manila on March 11, after which he was transported to the Netherlands to face charges of crimes against humanity related to his anti-drug policies during his presidency.
