Mumbai Indians Clinch Second WPL Title: Defeat Delhi Capitals by 8 Runs in Final
Mumbai Indians secured their second Women’s Premier League (WPL) title in three years by defeating Delhi Capitals by 8 runs in the final on Saturday. With this loss, Delhi finished as runners-up for the third consecutive time.
Mumbai Posts Competitive Total Despite Early Setback
Batting first at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai posted 149 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. The team had a shaky start, losing two wickets for just 14 runs. However, captain Harmanpreet Kaur played a crucial innings, scoring a half-century and building a vital 89-run partnership with Nat Sciver-Brunt.
After a slow start, Harmanpreet accelerated the scoring in the eighth over and helped Mumbai cross the 100-run mark in the 15th over. Sciver-Brunt was dismissed for 30 in the same over. Harmanpreet held the innings together but was eventually out for 66.
In the final overs, G. Kambale (10), Amanjot Kaur (14), and Saika Ishaque (8) contributed valuable runs, taking Mumbai’s total to 149.
For Delhi, Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen, and Arundhati Reddy took two wickets each, while Annabel Sutherland claimed one. Shikha Pandey and Minnu Mani went wicketless.
Delhi Falls Short in Chase
Chasing 150, Delhi Capitals also had a rough start, losing two wickets for just 17 runs. Their troubles deepened as they slumped to 66/5. Captain Meg Lanning (13), Shafali Verma (4), Jess Jonassen (13), and Annabel Sutherland (2) failed to make an impact.
Jemimah Rodrigues fought hard, scoring 30, but her dismissal further dented Delhi’s hopes. Sarah Bryce (5), Minnu Mani (4), and Shikha Pandey (0) also failed to contribute significantly.
Marizanne Kapp provided late resistance with a quickfire 40, including five fours and two sixes, but her dismissal sealed Delhi’s fate.
Mumbai Bowlers Seal the Victory
Delhi eventually managed only 141/9, falling short by 8 runs. Nat Sciver-Brunt starred with the ball for Mumbai, taking three wickets, while Amelia Kerr grabbed two. Shabnim Ismail, Hayley Matthews, and Saika Ishaque picked up one wicket each.
With this win, Mumbai Indians clinched their second WPL title, while Delhi Capitals had to settle for the runners-up spot once again.
