RG Kar Case: Mamata Banerjee Criticizes Life Sentence for Sanjay Roy

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the life imprisonment sentence given to Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case. Recently, the Sealdah court pronounced Roy guilty of the heinous crime committed against a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

‘If We Had Taken the Case, the Culprit Would Have Received the Death Penalty’

Mamata Banerjee accused the central investigative agency, CBI, of handling the case unfairly and claimed that responsibility should have remained with the Kolkata Police. During her speech in Murshidabad, she said, “If this case had been in the hands of the Kolkata Police, the culprit would definitely have received the death penalty.”

Raised Concerns Over the CBI Probe

The West Bengal CM raised several concerns regarding the CBI’s investigation process. She emphasized, “We demanded the death penalty, but the court has given life imprisonment. The case was taken away from us unfairly. If it was with the Kolkata Police, justice would have been served differently.”

Dissatisfied with State Police’s Exclusion

Mamata Banerjee also pointed out that state police have consistently delivered death penalties in similar cases, which is why she feels dissatisfied with the court’s decision. She further stated, “We do not know how the CBI conducted the investigation. In previous cases handled by our police, the death penalty was confirmed. I am not satisfied with this outcome.”

Public Anger and Protests Across India

The court’s verdict has sparked widespread outrage and protests across the country. Roy was convicted by the Sessions Court earlier, and the verdict has led to a wave of public anger and demands for stricter punishment.

This case continues to highlight the ongoing debate over the effectiveness and fairness of the investigation process in India.
