Rajkot Dog Show Attracts Over 500 Dogs, Highlights Breeding and Care
Rajkot, Gujarat – A grand dog show was held at Shastri Maidan on January 5, organized by the Saurashtra-Kutch Pet Traders and Breeders Association. The event featured over 500 dogs from more than 35 different breeds, with participants from across Gujarat. National-level experts judged the competition.
Among the standout performances was Cuki, a long-haired Shih Tzu, which secured first place in the toy breed category. Dog lovers and owners gathered to witness the diversity and skills of various dog breeds, including Pomeranians, Labradors, German Shepherds, Dobermans, St. Bernards, Beagles, Huskies, Chihuahuas, and many others.
Growing Popularity of Dog Breeds in Rajkot
Over the past decade and a half, the craze for dog breeding has been on the rise in Rajkot. Currently, over 15,000 dog lovers in the city are breeding and caring for their pets. Participants showcased their pets’ skills and obedience in the competition, while also receiving advice on pet care, food, and medical needs. The show included both tiny toy breeds weighing 1 kg and larger dogs weighing up to 100 kg.
Importance of Proper Care for Dogs
Mitul Bhil, a local resident, shared her experience with Cuki, the Shih Tzu, which won first place. “Cuki is a very calm and well-mannered dog. The breed is easy to care for, with simple grooming and feeding requirements,” she said. “I have been fond of dogs for many years, and this is my first time owning a small breed like the Shih Tzu. Maintaining their long hair requires effort, but it paid off in the end.”
Proper Care is Like Raising a Child: Kamlesh Dodiya
Kamlesh Dodiya, a dog lover with 40 years of experience, emphasized the importance of proper care for dogs. “Dog ownership requires as much responsibility as raising a child,” he said. “The city now has a variety of breeds, including German Shepherds, Dobermans, and Shih Tzus, all being cared for in local homes.”
Event Receives Great Response: Bhavnesh Pandya
Bhavnesh Pandya, President of the Saurashtra-Kutch Pet Shop Association, expressed his satisfaction with the event’s turnout. “We organize this dog show every year, and it has received tremendous response. This year, 35 new breeds participated. People in Rajkot are keeping dogs worth up to ₹5 lakh. New breeds like the Cane Corso are becoming popular,” he said. “Not only people from Saurashtra and Kutch but also dog owners from other parts of Gujarat have come to showcase their pets.”
