Wife of Wrongly Deported Salvadoran Man Vows to Fight for His Return

The wife of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man wrongfully deported under the Trump administration, has pledged to continue fighting for his return to the United States.

Speaking at a press conference in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday (April 9), Jennifer Vasquez Sura held back tears as she denounced the government’s actions, calling her husband’s removal an “abduction” and “kidnapping.”

She was joined by U.S. Representative Adriano Espaillat, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, both of whom expressed support for her and called for justice in the case.

On Monday (April 7), the U.S. Supreme Court temporarily blocked a lower court’s order that would have required the Trump administration to return Abrego Garcia to the U.S. by the end of the day. The administration admitted that his deportation was carried out in error.

In a filing to the Supreme Court, the Justice Department stated that while Abrego Garcia was removed to El Salvador due to an “administrative error,” his actual deportation was not considered a mistake. The error, officials claimed, was in sending him to El Salvador despite a deportation protection order he had received in 2019.

Justice Department lawyers further argued that Abrego Garcia is no longer eligible for deportation protection, citing alleged ties to the MS-13 criminal gang—a group the Trump administration designated as a foreign terrorist organization.

Despite these claims, Vasquez Sura remains determined to bring her husband back home and clear his name. She urged the government to acknowledge its mistake and uphold the values of justice and due process.
